AUGUST 2006

Dear FFASA Supporter,

Never before has a group of concerned citizens donated their time and money to publicly communicate that high prosecutor turnover is detrimental to public safety. Never before has a group called upon politicians, business leaders, community organizations, and the media to discuss the issue of high prosecutor turnover in Florida. Never before has a group undertaken the challenge of improving the quality of our criminal justice system by taking a public stand against high prosecutor turnover. And never before has a group tried to improve the quality of life across Florida by creating awareness of the detrimental effect high prosecutor turnover has on public safety. In just 4 months from its creation, FFASA has done all of that with great results!

As evidenced by newspaper articles across the state, a Sun-Sentinel editorial, a cover story by the Daily Business Review, and official positions by gubernatorial candidates, high prosecutor turnover is now making headlines across the state.

FFASA will keep the issue of prosecutor turnover in the front burner. This requires an unprecedented effort to keep the media engaged. It also requires reaching out to business leaders and community organizations. Finally, we must begin to communicate directly with legislators in Tallahassee. FFASA's Legislative Committee is already working towards that goal.

FFASA's message is clear. Our political leaders cannot say they are for "public safety" if they ignore high prosecutor turnover. For the myriad of police officers, detectives and lab technicians involved in the successful investigation of a criminal case, you still need one experienced and competent prosecutor to prove the case in order to keep the criminal element behind bars. It's that simple!

I personally thank the dozens of supporters who have taken the time to acknowledge our efforts. Your letters, e-mails, and financial support fuel our commitment. If you care about the safety of your family, your quality of life, and if you understand that a healthy criminal justice system is the foundation of public safety, I invite you to join FFASA today.

  • Gubernatorial Candidates Disclose Their Official Position On Prosecutor Turnover

Friends of Florida Assistant State Attorneys (FFASA) requested from all gubernatorial candidates their official position on prosecutor turnover in the State of Florida. This unprecedented request was acknowledged by three of the four gubernatorial candidates. Their responses serve as an educational tool that highlights this issue of utmost importance to the safety of our communities.

Because FFASA distributed their responses through a state-wide press release, by the time you read this newsletter dozens of newspapers have already reported on the candidates' positions. This is another example of how FFASA is keeping the spotlight on the issue of high prosecutor turnover in Florida.

Comcast Newsmakers Interview To Air in September

Mr. Arias' five-minute interview for the segment Comcast Newsmakers, with host Spero Canton, will air August 30 through September 5th and September 13th through the 19th. The interview will air on CNN Headline News several times daily at 25 and 55 minutes past the hour. Because the segments are randomly inserted by computer, an exact air time cannot be provided. The segment has the potential of reaching 600,000 Comcast costumers in South Florida. We thank Mr. Canton and his staff for the opportunity to raise awareness for the issue of high prosecutor turnover in Florida.
